Suffolk has long had a mix of provision within the authority. Both the Northern and Western areas have a three-tier system, while the Southern area around Ipswich is a more traditional 2-tier structure.
In March 2007 the full council agreed proposals to re-structure the authority to organise all schools along two-tier lines. The change began with the closure of 12 schools in 2011, but funding issues caused significant delays.
The remaining local authority middle schools in Bury St Edmunds closed in 2016, although two middle schools are outside the local authority's control and so will not close.
