North Tyneside LEA was formed as a Metropolitan Borough in 1974. The authority now retains just 4 Middle Schools. In recent years, 3 of the five 3-tier pyramid groups have reverted to a 2-tier structure.
In its 2001 report on the LEA, Ofsted stated:
"In order that schools, parents and pupils in Whitley Bay, Monkseaton and adjacent areas are able to plan on an informed basis, the council should, in the school organisation plan review for 2001...include a clear statement of how the LEA will monitor and evaluate provision, and if necessary how and when it will review the situation again." (Ofsted, 2001)
The authority's current School Organisation Plan suggests the change in the remaining areas of the LEA are likely not to take place in the near future:
"The LEA consulted on options for change to a two tier system of transfer in the Whitley Bay and Monkseaton area. There was insufficient support for the proposals to make recommendations for change in the short term and the Council decided not to proceed further but to maintain the current system.
